While removing a tooth is never our team’s first choice, it’s often necessary if someone has a large cavity or the enamel is so broken that it cannot be put back together. Should you ever need an extraction, you can trust our team to make the experience as easy and comfortable as possible. Thanks to our Dr. Kboudi’s advanced training and use of sedation dentistry, the entire process for tooth extractions in Beverly Hills will be over before you know it, and your only thought will be, “That’s it?”

Reasons Why Tooth Extractions Are Necessary

Tooth extractions are never the first option that Dr. Kboudi considers when a tooth is damaged or decayed in some way. However, there are a handful of reasons why we may recommend an extraction if all other options have been exhausted. For example, extractions are typically performed when:

  • A tooth has become impacted (or trapped underneath existing teeth or gum tissue)
  • A tooth was severely damaged as a result of traumatic injury
  • Gum disease has broken down the bone tissue responsible for holding the tooth in place
  • Severe tooth decay has made the tooth unsalvageable

The Process of Removing a Tooth

While you’ve probably heard the phrase “pulling teeth” in reference to a tooth extraction, the truth is that the procedure doesn’t involve any pulling at all! Instead, after a patient has been numbed with a local anesthetic, the tooth is rocked gently back and forth using a dental tool known as an elevator until it slips out on its own. Finally, we use a pair of dental forceps to gently hold the tooth and carefully remove it from your jaw.

Most patients don’t even realize their tooth is gone until we tell them. This is in large part due to the local anesthetic numbing much of the mouth ahead of the procedure. Once the tooth has been removed, we’ll ask you to bite down onto a gauze pad so that a blood clot can begin to form and heal over your tooth socket.

Tooth Extraction Aftercare

A little tenderness and bleeding are common afterward, but these symptoms are minor and can usually be managed with OTC medicine. In some cases, we may also prescribe a painkiller you get from your local pharmacy if needed. Immediately following your procedure, we’ll go over recommendations for replacement teeth (with the exception of wisdom teeth), that you can think over ahead of your follow-up appointment.

Once you get home, we recommend keeping the following aftercare tips in mind:

  • Take all medication as prescribed
  • Use a cold compress to bring down any facial swelling
  • Do not spit forcefully or use straws for at least 48 hours after your procedure
  • Avoid very hot or cold beverages for the next day or so
  • Get plenty of rest the same day as your extraction and keep your head elevated to promote healing
  • Avoid hard or crunchy foods
  • Avoid strenuous activities for the next few days
  • Do not smoke or use tobacco of any kind
