What is Gummy Smile Correction?
Also known as cosmetic gum recontouring/crown lengthening, gummy smile correction is a type of periodontal surgery that works to improve the appearance of your smile by removing small amounts of excess gum tissue. By removing this gum tissue in a conservative manner, we can expose more of your natural tooth enamel. While having excess gum tissue does not cause harm to your oral health, it can make teeth appear short or stubby in nature, which many patients do not prefer.
Keep in mind that this treatment not only removes excess gum tissue, but reshapes it in order to make the gum line straighter and more even with your teeth. Furthermore, we may also reshape the bone tissue in your smile if necessary. Even if multiple teeth need adjustments, we can often address them in a single appointment.
How Does the Process Work?
Once you arrive for your initial consultation, we’ll closely examine your smile and listen to your specific concerns. Then, we can begin planning your treatment and set you up for an appointment at a later date. At this next visit, we’ll start by providing local anesthetic to the gums in order to make your treatment as comfortable as possible. We will also provide sedation at this time if requested.
From there, we use a series of dental instruments to carefully and conservatively remove small amounts of gum tissue to expose your tooth enamel. Depending on the amount of gum tissue you’d like to address, treatment can be completed in a single appointment. Upon completion, we’ll provide you with aftercare tips that best promote healing of your gum tissue.
Am I a Candidate for Gummy Smile Correction?
If you believe your smile to be overly gummy, you’ll want to schedule an appointment with us to confirm if treatment is right for you. If you currently have unaddressed gum disease, this will need to be managed before any cosmetic treatment can be completed. Additionally, if we determine that you need to have a dental restoration placed but excess gum tissue is making it too difficult to do so, cosmetic gum recontouring may also be performed.
